O du lieber Augustin - deutsches Kinderlied und Volkslied.

Marx Augustin oder der liebe Augustin (eigentlich Markus Augustin 1643 in Wien - 1685) war ein Bänkelsänger, Sackpfeifer (bagpiper) und Stegreifdichter und ist durch die Ballade auf ihn sprichwörtlich geworden. Augustin soll sehr beliebt gewesen sein, weil er mit seinen zotigen Liedern vor allem während der Pest in Wien im Jahre 1679 die Bevölkerung der Stadt aufheiterte (he became popular primarily for cheering up folks in Vienna during the1679 Black Plague). Da es sich um das "Pestlied" handelt und die Strophen teilweise für Kinder nicht geeignet sind (Since this discusses the plague, and the further stanzas aren't suitable for kids), wurden hier nur die ersten beiden Strophen besungen (only the first 2 verses are included here)! Viel Spaß beim Mitsingen!

Starting this November, German parents will be able to select male, female, or “indeterminate” when filling out their newborn’s birth certificate. This means that parents won’t have to label their baby’s gender, thereby allowing those born with intersex characteristics to make a decision later in life. Or not.

The new law, which goes into effect on November 1, was passed back in May, but has only now started getting widespread attention — a mere six weeks after Australia became the first country in the world to introduce legal guidelines on gender recognition. Back in July, the country added “intersex” and other gender designations to official documents, like passports.

An intersex person is someone who has a variation in sex characteristics, including chromosomes and genitals that don’t allow them to be identified neatly as either male or female.

A famous example is South African sprinter Caster Semenya. In her case, she has internal testes which produce elevated levels of testosterone. Though her sex is ambiguous, she identifies as female, which has led to a number of problems for her as an athlete.

Traditionally, parents have to select male or female when filling out the birth certificate, giving children virtually no say in the matter. What's more, as Silvan Agius of the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association recently noted, intersex babies are often surgically made female — which is the easier and more convenient option — but one that can eventually lead to physical and psychological problems.

As Germany sets this important precedent, however, the rest of the European Union (aside from possibly Finland) is lagging behind. Spiegel Online reports:

According to Silvan Agius...the European Union is lagging behind on the issue. Though Brussels commissioned a report on trans and intersex minorities in 2010, and has since attempted to coordinate efforts to prohibit gender discrimination, progress has been halting.

"Things are moving slower than they should at the European level," says Agius. "Though Brussels has ramped up efforts to promote awareness of trans and intersex discrimination, I would like to see things speed up."

The subsequent EU report on potential changes to European Union law, which was published in 2012 and co-authored by Agius, found that discrimination against trans and intersex people was still "rampant in all EU countries."

On a related note, Sweden recently introduced a new gender-neutral pronoun, “hen.” As we reported last year:

[In] an effort to work towards yet even greater levels of gender equality, Sweden now wants to do it through the channel of linguistic gender-neutrality. A good number of forward-looking Swedes have determined that government and society should no longer recognize any legal distinctions between the sexes. To that end, they have officially introduced the new gender-neutral pronoun, "hen," to the vernacular. To make it all the more official, they added it to the country's National Encyclopedia and defined it as a "proposed gender-neutral personal pronoun instead of he [han in Swedish] and she [hon]."

Wow. If Germany and Australia are concerned that the rest of Europe is “lagging behind,” I’d hate to hear what they have to say about those of us in the Americas.

Perhaps the best thing about the new legislation is that it doesn't force people to choose to identify as "male" or "female," once they reach adulthood. Instead, intersex people could conceivably live out their lives without ever having to choose one or the other.

I work in a medical school/teaching hospital and just saw a lecture on this topic. It dealt with reconstructive surgery for people who were born intersex and assigned what turned out to be the wrong gender. Interestingly, it listed the age that the subjects first began to experience gender dysphoria, and in every case it was around seven or eight years old. (I would have guessed adolescence.) All of them are doing well now, but they had to deal with a lot of problems because someone went, "Oh, this infant has ambiguous sexual characteristics, better just randomly pick one."

   By the way, the largest operating US AF base in Germany -- near "K-town" (actually, Kaiserslautern, of World Cup 1954 fame) -- bears a similar name to this band: Ramstein.

   To support what the DIE WELT Journalist says about how Rammstein has helped motivate students to learn German, please read the following student reflection. This student took Spanish in high school and never thought about doing anything in German. German, Rammstein-style has proved contagious for her.

4. “I knew right away that this Rammstein event at Madison Square Gardens was going to be something that I would remember for the rest of my life. So the night before the concert I carefully planned out what I was going to wear. In anticipation, I also listened to my Rammstein playlist. I was absolutely STOKED and it wasn’t even the day of the concert. 
   
   By the time Concert day came, my mind was a mess of excitement.
   
   Having listened to them on the way up, I could not sit still en route to the concert-- nor could anyone else around me. I sensed that most everyone present had a pent - up desire, having waited for Rammstein’s Return for an eternity. After all, it had been ten years since their last visit here. 
   As for me, I’ve only been a Rammstein fan since 2007! But in the three years since my first exposure in college to the video Du Hast, I fell in love -- with Rammstein’s emotionally turbulent style. Their music was incredibly cathartic throughout the best and worst times of my young adult life. Therefore, once “the wall” came tumbling down, and the crowd essentially lost it in anticipation, I too found myself completely overwhelmed with an emotion that I have yet to name.
   
   Not surprisingly, Rammstein played many songs from their new album, which excited me since their song “Haifisch” is amongst my favorites (”Reise, Reise” and “Rosenrot” being the other two). I wasn’t alone to have been expecting them to include the very critical song, “Amerika.” After all, Rammstein isn’t a band known for censoring themselves. But I was absolutely enthralled over the selection they played after that main segment, YES, even though they hadn’t even played any of my favorites! I also felt sure that they’d be coming back for an Encore. We got THREE! After screaming my ever-loving lungs out, they greeted use with “Die Sonne” -- another of my most loved songs! Shortly thereafter, out came those chords; it was “Haifisch” time!
   
   I screamed so loud that my friends started to become somewhat concerned!
   
   I was *so *elated that they hadn't skipped my favorite song! Why, I just, Dear Lord.... even just now remembering my emotions sends me into a state of absolute speechlessness. It was heaven-sent.
   
   Then, when they followed with “Ich Will”, the crowd actually seemed to become a sea of screams! Hair! Hands! I felt so privileged to actually BE THERE! Yes! To have been there to witness it; indescribeable. 
   
   The grand finale “Engel”, were 8 more-than-amazing minutes; a perfectly fitting climax to a phenomenal evening. Rammstein seemed to be honoring us for having participated in this evening with them. 
   
   After the lights came on, I simply had to sit down for a while. I was so moved by the performance that I could do nothing else. I was spent. We all were. We all just "knew." We knew that we witnessed a performance akin to the Beatles Concert at Shea Stadium in 1965, or the Jimmy Hendrix performance at Woodstock. Revolutionary. That was all that there was to it. We had witnessed a revolutionary concert, and to say that we were bewildered by it all would be an understatement.
   
   Rammstein is the first German band to break such ground in the United States. Their presence here is obviously welcome! They have ignited so much passion for the German language here, that it seems to me they deserve be officially commended for it. 
   
   I know for a fact that I wouldn’t be this far ahead in my German studies if it hadn’t been for Rammstein. I think they helped get me addicted to learning German. They continue to inspire me by their lyrics and song writing. In fact, I even wrote a 300,000 word novel, which incidentally includes segments on the wide-spread and amazing linguistic addiction there is in the USA to Rammstein. 
   
   Therefore, the fact that I was in attendance that night on December 11th 2010 in Madison Square Garden really means the world to me. I will cherish the memory of that concert for as long as I live." (Theresa S.)

      Rammstein is one of my favorite bands; they should definitely come to the US and give a motivational concert.  If it were here at our high school, it would be one of the greatest events of this high school. ever.

      I think it's great that music can help inspire someone to learn a language. One of the reasons why I took German in my middle school was because of Rammstein (although I rarely listen to them anymore).

   Wao i didn't know Rammstein was the first German band to break in the United States. But I do not blame this girl at all. I would have felt like her (so excited) if I was there.

   Rammstein needs to do more concerts in America. I know they've been banned from Springfield, MA due to their antics at their previous concert, but that was almost 15 years ago.

There is quite a story of the Patron Saint of unhappily married husbands (!)  and also of horses and their riders.  In his honor, nearly every 2nd Sunday in May (since about 880 ! but with several breaks, including a long one from 1848-1948), there is a parade -- featuring plenty of horses.

Germany is one of the most in-demand tourist destinations in the world, as tourists from the world over flock to experience the history, culture and sense of grandeur embodied by Berlin, Munich, Hamburg and other great cities.

Even smaller towns  like Heidelberg and Regensburg have become ever more popular stops on the tourist trail. That's why we're bringing you the ten most beautiful German towns you've probably never heard of, so that you when you're planning your next trip you can enjoy unspoilt charm in the serenity it deserves.

 

The stunning beauty of certain regions like Bavaria and the Rhineland is well documented, but the northern and eastern states also have incredible places up their sleeves.

Because so many German towns and cities were flattened during the war, places that were left unscathed and still have their original old towns are all the more marked out by their rarity.

Meersburg, Baden Württemberg - Right on the idyllic Lake Constance, Meersburg is a southern paradise. The upper and lower parts of the town are connected by steep stairwells, and from the upper town the view out onto the lake is astonishing.

Fulda, Hesse - Right in the heart of Germany, Fulda offers a stunning array of architecture of different styles, especially the impressive cathedral pictured.

Görlitz, Saxony - Germany's most eastern city lies on the Neisse River and just across the water is the Polish town Zgorzelec. From Renaissance to Baroque, and from late Gothic to art nouveau, Görlitz's beautiful buildings have it all.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Bavaria - Considered as Germany's ultimate medieval town, this gem in northern Bavaria offers a journey back in time as you wander the cobbled streets. This region of Franconia is particularly striking.

Freiburg, Baden-Württemberg - On the edge of the Black Forest, Freiburg is both German's sunniest and warmest city. It is best known for the Bächle, small streams that run through the streets of the old town. According to local superstitions, anyone who accidentally steps into the Bächle will inevitably marry a Freiburger.

Trier, Rhineland Palatinate - On the banks of the Moselle and near the Luxemburg border, it is the oldest city in Germany, dating back to the first century BC. The combination of Roman history and homely comforts makes Trier a must-visit.
