Starting this November, German parents will be able to select male, female, or “indeterminate” when filling out their newborn’s birth certificate. This means that parents won’t have to label their baby’s gender, thereby allowing those born with intersex characteristics to make a decision later in life. Or not.

The new law, which goes into effect on November 1, was passed back in May, but has only now started getting widespread attention — a mere six weeks after Australia became the first country in the world to introduce legal guidelines on gender recognition. Back in July, the country added “intersex” and other gender designations to official documents, like passports.

An intersex person is someone who has a variation in sex characteristics, including chromosomes and genitals that don’t allow them to be identified neatly as either male or female.

A famous example is South African sprinter Caster Semenya. In her case, she has internal testes which produce elevated levels of testosterone. Though her sex is ambiguous, she identifies as female, which has led to a number of problems for her as an athlete.

Traditionally, parents have to select male or female when filling out the birth certificate, giving children virtually no say in the matter. What's more, as Silvan Agius of the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association recently noted, intersex babies are often surgically made female — which is the easier and more convenient option — but one that can eventually lead to physical and psychological problems.

As Germany sets this important precedent, however, the rest of the European Union (aside from possibly Finland) is lagging behind. Spiegel Online reports:

According to Silvan Agius...the European Union is lagging behind on the issue. Though Brussels commissioned a report on trans and intersex minorities in 2010, and has since attempted to coordinate efforts to prohibit gender discrimination, progress has been halting.

"Things are moving slower than they should at the European level," says Agius. "Though Brussels has ramped up efforts to promote awareness of trans and intersex discrimination, I would like to see things speed up."

The subsequent EU report on potential changes to European Union law, which was published in 2012 and co-authored by Agius, found that discrimination against trans and intersex people was still "rampant in all EU countries."

On a related note, Sweden recently introduced a new gender-neutral pronoun, “hen.” As we reported last year:

[In] an effort to work towards yet even greater levels of gender equality, Sweden now wants to do it through the channel of linguistic gender-neutrality. A good number of forward-looking Swedes have determined that government and society should no longer recognize any legal distinctions between the sexes. To that end, they have officially introduced the new gender-neutral pronoun, "hen," to the vernacular. To make it all the more official, they added it to the country's National Encyclopedia and defined it as a "proposed gender-neutral personal pronoun instead of he [han in Swedish] and she [hon]."

Wow. If Germany and Australia are concerned that the rest of Europe is “lagging behind,” I’d hate to hear what they have to say about those of us in the Americas.

Perhaps the best thing about the new legislation is that it doesn't force people to choose to identify as "male" or "female," once they reach adulthood. Instead, intersex people could conceivably live out their lives without ever having to choose one or the other.

I work in a medical school/teaching hospital and just saw a lecture on this topic. It dealt with reconstructive surgery for people who were born intersex and assigned what turned out to be the wrong gender. Interestingly, it listed the age that the subjects first began to experience gender dysphoria, and in every case it was around seven or eight years old. (I would have guessed adolescence.) All of them are doing well now, but they had to deal with a lot of problems because someone went, "Oh, this infant has ambiguous sexual characteristics, better just randomly pick one."

Gender neutral pronoun in English? German?

In English, kids are beginning to use "they" rather than "he/she."

The following pronouns have been suggested by some University students now, and referenced in a couple articles), but aren't really ‘in use’ at this point:

                “sier”  (sies/siem/sien),

• Possessivpronomen     sieni (sienir / seinis), 
• Artikel/Relativpronomen     dier  (dies /diem /dien)

But there are other ideas floating around out there too.  This is something we'll need to wait out.

Gender and Plural Practice

Here is the comparison of adverbs hin (hither) and her (yon -- both from old English). 



I especially like Mr. Wallace having included slang expressions, which erase the directional charge, by standing in for both hin und her.

In the examples below which comprise the production and use of "da- and wo- compound words", notice that our tutor includes the adverbs hin und her with his preposition examples.  Well, they do indeed work with da- and wo- compounds.

Gender Trick mit Quasi-Wörter?

 Wie kann man sich nur diese Endung erinnern?!

"Quasi" ist lateinisch und heißt auf Deutsch "wie". Und das ist der Trick:

Man arrangiert die Silben so, dass man es wie ein Wort ausspricht.
[Und dazu kommt noch eine kurze Geschichte mit Bildchen.]

Ready?  So heißen die Endungen, die auf Deutsch MASKULIN sind:

der    Ig-ling-or-(i)smus [Idee:  Dieser ist ein Bazillus für die vielen Artikel in der deutschen Sprache verantwortlich! ]

Vom Bild sieht man, dass der Bazillus einige Stacheln hat wie ein Igel?
Denk daran! Das hilft, dir an die erste Silbe zu erinnern: Ig-ling...

Das zweite Quasi-Wort ist für die FEMININ-Wörter : Diese Frau ist Wissenschaftlerin am Institut für  die   Heit-schaft-tion(s)-tät-ik-keit-ungs-ei     (NOTE:  ik, not ig)    [Dort forscht sie an einem Impfstoff (immunization) gegen den Iglingorismus.]  Das Wort ist ziemlich lang, aber wenn man ganz langsam beginnt, und nicht aufhört, kann man es doch lernen.

                         [Stell dir vor, wie heiter die Frau bei ihrer Arbeit ist.... um an die erste Silbe zu denken: Heit-schaft-tion...]

Das Dritte ist für die NEUTRAL Endungen: das   Tum-chen-ma-ment-um-lein ! Kurz und leicht, nicht wahr?

Kein Hinweis mehr auf die vielen Professoren und Professorinnen. Die Universität in Leipzig streicht auch das Binnen-I und alle Schrägstriche. Ab sofort gibt es in der Grundordnung nur noch die Professorin. Grandios!

Von Kurt Tucholsky stammt der Seufzer "meine Sorgen möcht‘  ich haben".  Dabei ahnte Tucholsky noch nichts von den drängenden Problemen unserer Tage, nichts von Klimawandel und Eurokrise, von Tempolimit und Ehegattensplitting und schon gar nichts vom immerwährenden Kampf und die geschlechterneutrale Sprache.

Doch jetzt ist ein Ende des ewigen Zanks in Sicht. An der Universität der schönen Stadt Leipzig, die ja mit Auerbachs Keller über ein Etablissement verfügt, in dem der Akademiker mit Hilfe geistiger Getränke seit jeher gerne in neue Dimensionen vorstößt, – an der Uni Leipzig also war man der nervigen Diskussionen um die geschlechterneutrale Sprache leid und hat – ja – den gordischen Knoten durchschlagen.

Podcast Ende der Welt

Die Radioglosse "Ende der Welt" läuft immer am Ende des aktuellen Morgenmagazins radioWelt (6.00 bis 8.30 Uhr) um 8.25 Uhr in Bayern 2.

In der Grundordnung der Uni Leipzig, – das ist eine Art Satzung – gibt es künftig keinen Professor mehr und keinen Rektor, auch keine Doppelformen mit Binnen-I oder Schrägstrich Professor/Professorin. Es gibt nur noch die weibliche Form: Professorin, Rektorin, Assistentin – und eine Fußnote erklärt, dass zu der weiblichen Form auch die Männer gehören. Fertig! Generisches Femininum heißt das. Da kann man nur sagen: Respekt, Herr Professorin! 

 

Das ist mal eine klare Sache; Schluss mit dem Herumgeeiere, wie etwa in der neuen Straßenverkehrsordnung, wo sich jahrzehntelang die Autofahrer herumgetrieben haben  bis man jetzt, um endlich auch die Autofahrerinnen verwarnen zu können, die beiden zu "Autofahrenden" verschmolzen hat.

Die Stadt Hannover wollte – Zeit wars – endlich auch Frauen ins Freie lassen und machte deshalb aus der Fußgängerzone – Sie merken „Gänger“, keine „Gängerinnen“ – aus der Fußgängerzone machte man in Hannover einfach die Flaniermeile. Gottseidank!

Der Anfang vom Ende des Patriarchats

Da ist die Uni Leipzig radikaler. Und vielleicht wird ihre Entscheidung einmal als Anfang vom Ende des Patriarchats gewürdigt werden. Das Beispiel muss natürlich Schule machen – überall wo Männer und Frauen zusammen sind. 

Damit es jetzt nicht gegenüber den Männern ungerecht wird, könnte man ja – frei Karl Valentins Modell zur Verkehrsberuhigung – abwechseln. Zum Beispiel: in Bayern alles männlich, in Baden-Württemberg bei Herrn Ministerpräsidentin Kretschmann weiblich. Oder: Medizinberufe männlich, die Bundeswehr weiblich – zu Befehl, Herr Oberfeldwebelin!

Klar – das mag auch verwirren. Und es wird manche am Sinn der geschlechterneutralen Sprache zweifeln lassen – wie den Diskutanten im Internet, der den Leipziger Beschluss mit dem Satz kommentierte: "Da haben wir die Salatin."

An der Uni Leipzig sollten schlaue Leute sitzen die an Hand der allgemein in Deutschland üblichen umgangssprachlichen Anrede wie Frau bzw. Herr erkennen welchem Geschlecht der Herr Lehrer, Herr Dozent, Herr Professor oder Frau Lehrerin, Frau Dozentin, Frau Professorin, bzw. Herr Amtsträger oder Frau Ministerin angehört. Wenn nicht, sollten sich die Entscheidungsträger für diesen Schildbürgerstreich mal genetisch untersuchen lassen, ob da noch alle Chromosomen am
richtigen Platz sitzen oder ob diese sich per geistigen Stuhlgang bereits zu diesem Geschlechts= verdrehungs - Dünnschiss völlig gehirnverkompostiert haben. Selbst wenn es an der Uni Leibzig eine X- Chromosomen Mehrheit, sprich weibliche Majorität gibt, kann das unmöglich Grundlage für solchen Bezeichnungs- und Entscheidungsschwachsinn sein. Das wäre ja gleich zu setzen mit der

Forderung alle feminine Pronomen bei Zahlen der fairen Ausgeglichenheit mit dem Neutrum Pronomen zu ersetzen, "das 13" statt "die 13", oder Herr.....
