Applications are now being accepted for the Department of State sponsored study abroad programs U.S. high school students for 2016-17:

 

•   National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) 
•   Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study Abroad (YES Abroad)   
•   Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX) with Germany                       

These merit-based scholarships include international airfare, tuition, and program costs, as well as meals and living accommodations (often with a host family).  

The programs include language training, and as such, have no prior language restrictions or prerequisites.  Gap year students who meet the age requirements are also encouraged to apply.  

 

Each program has a separate online application process, and application deadlines vary from late October through early January.  

Visit the program websites or www.exchanges.state.gov for specific information and application deadlines.  

We are particularly trying to reach young people who would not otherwise have the opportunity to participate in a study abroad experience.

Scholarships for American High School

Students to Study Abroad

 

The National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) offers merit-based scholarships to study one of seven critical foreign languages:  Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Korean, Persian (Tajiki), Russian, and Turkish.  The NSLI-Y program is designed to immerse participants in the cultural life of the host country, provide formal and informal language practice, and spark a lifetime interest in foreign languages and cultures.   The application deadline for summer 2016 and academic year 2016-2017 programs is October 29, 2015. The Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) Abroad Program offers  merit-based scholarships to spend an academic year in countries that may include Bosnia & Herzegovina, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Macedonia, Malaysia, Morocco, Philippines, Senegal, Thailand, and Turkey. This program increases understanding between people in the United States and people in countries with significant Muslim populations.  Students live with host families, attend local high schools, do community service, and complete a capstone project.  Applications for academic year 2016-17 programs are due December 1, 2015.  Visit www.yes-abroad.org for more information. 

The Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Program (CBYX) offers merit-based scholarships for an academic year in Germany.  The program was established in 1983 to celebrate German-American friendship based on common values of democracy.  Students live with host families, attend local schools, and participate in community life in Germany.  For more information and application deadlines, visit the organization in charge of recruitment for your state at http://www.usagermanyscholarship.org/.  Deadlines for U.S. applicants range from December 1, 2015 to January 15, 2016, depending on state of residency.

Study Abroad Scholarship Opportunities 2015

Hi Students:

Might you be inspired by the opportunities offered by these programs?  They are all worth a look!  

They have been pursued by only a handful of NKHS students in the past, but they have made amazing - certainly life-changing differences on each of those individuals!   

Last year for instance, Katja (Kayla L.) spent the year in Leipzig through CBYX (which started the day after owe had returned from our GAPP exchange; this summer we should have a bit more breathing room).  This past summer, Sadie H. spend 5 weeks in Russia through NSLI-Y. Both are recently back. Perhaps you'd like to approach them with your questions as well.

Micky participated in the same program as our own Katja, but one year ahead of her.  He filmed his German learning every single week during his year in Köln (and environs) -- yes, there are even 53 episodes.  I checked a few of them out, and found each one interesting.  What I find particularly useful is that he includes subtitles, along with lessons he's learning about language mistakes he's made.

Hi Frau Baker!

I just wanted to send you the link to my video about the Nurburgring  ( http://youtu.be/3T1lHdoYRkw ), but also just wanted to say hello!  

I've been in Munich for a little over a week now, and have classes for 3 hours every weekday.  Though I'm learning a lot, I am also exploring a ton, and have fallen in love with the city and more in love with Germany in general! I will continue to post videos like this about different experiences I have, I already have a few videos planned!
