U.S. President Barack Obama has awarded German Chancellor Angela Merkel the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honour in the United States.
'These outstanding honorees come from a broad range of backgrounds and they've excelled in a broad range of fields, but all of them have lived extraordinary lives that have inspired us, enriched our culture, and made our country and our world a better place,' Obama said in a statement on Wednesday.
Obama noted that Merkel 'is the first woman and first East German to serve as chancellor of a unified Germany' and 'has often said that freedom is the happiest experience of her life.'
The ceremony will take place early next year.
Others who will be receiving the award with Merkel include:
former president George HW Bush;
legendary investor Warren Buffett;
poet Maya Angelou;
American artist Jasper Johns;
celebrated cellist Yo-Yo Ma;
former baseball star Stan Musial;
former basketball star Bill Russell;
former labor federation leader John Sweeney;
Representative John Lewis, a longtime civil rights activist;
John Adams, co-founder of the Natural Resources Defense Council environmental advocacy group.
Das ist interessant und kuhl.
ReplyDeleteThis is great! Germany just has it going on for them!!! This article also shows how women's role in society has changed so much! We are now getting such high ranked awards. This lady really made a big difference in improving the culture around us. This is good for Germany because it seems that no matter what happens, people will never raise there heads from the WW2 ,horrible incident in Germany.
ReplyDeleteDas ist so stark! Ich verstehe nicht warum George Buch ist in hier.
ReplyDeleteThe other people receiving the award with her are from the US so it's pretty awesome that she will be included in the ceremony as well and recognized for all that she has done
ReplyDeleteHerzlichen Glückwunsch an Angela Merkel. Das ist eine wirkliche Ehre.
ReplyDeleteDas ist eine alles sterne liste. Sie ist mit viele gutes (company). Sie must (proud) sein. That's really amazing. I wonder how they rank civillian honors?
ReplyDeleteIch mochte ihr fur den Sieg eine so grosse Auszeichnung gratulieren. Warum gibt Obama die Auszeichnung?
ReplyDeleteAngela Merkel has a lot going for her. She is the most powerful women in the world, she is the first women chancellor to rule over untied Germany, and she is going to recieve this rare and celebrated medal of freedom. Germany most be very proud of her. I'm certainly very impressed. I was surprise to reconize some other names on the list for the medal. Yo-Yo Ma is a really good cellist and it would be amazing to hear him in person. I know he played at President Obama's inauguration in 2009.
ReplyDeleteDas ist interessant. It is cool to see interactions between germany and the US
ReplyDeleteEs its schön daß Obama gibt Merkel diese Auszeichnung. Deutschland und die USA haben einen guten beziehung.

ReplyDeleteThis is kinda off topic but did you know that Obama got hurt during a pick up game of basketball. I guess he needed to go to the hospital and needed a good amount of stiches.
ReplyDeleteGermany really has it going for them here in the United States.Good Job.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Boris the Germans do have it going for them here in the United states but on the other hand I disagree because they may have it good but it could also be better then it is now.
ReplyDeleteThis is really cool. I'm glad that America is recognizing someone other than just Americans because our country is usually self-centered.
