Ditte's Knusperhaus- für ein Media Zentrum in Schweden

Unfortunately I must enjoy this fine house from afar. It was made for an early Advent celebration at the local library by my Danish cousin, Ditte, complete with shuttered windows. The cookies on the platter in the background look especially tempting. I'm wondering if they might be tiles for the interior.

Was isst du?
Sappelsalat.
Gute Gesundheit, dein ganzes Lebenlang.
Kleines Blaues (Schmetterling)

JA!  Und wie!

So heissen die Fuenf:  Silvana, Johannes, Daniel, Esther, Christian.  Natuerlich sind alle 5 voellig anders.

Wer ist hilfsbereit?
Wer ist ehrlich?
Wer ist der klugste?
Wer darf nicht fehlen?
Wer ist selbstbewusst?
Wer ist froehlich, und temperamentvoll?

Sweden is shifting to a 6-hour work day

Image: Monkey Business Images/Shutterstock.com
HUGE NEWS! --rsb

*Packs up life, books plane ticket*
BEC CREW
30 SEP 2015
Despite research telling us it’s a really bad idea, many of us end up working 50-hour weeks or more because we think we’ll get more done and reap the benefits later. And according to a study published last month involving 600,000 people, those of us who clock up a 55-hour week will have a 33 percent greater risk of having a stroke than those who maintain a 35- to 40-hour week.
With this in mind, Sweden is moving towards a standard 6-hour work day, with businesses across the country having already implemented the change, and a retirement home embarking on a year-long experiment to compare the costs and benefits of a shorter working day.
"I think the 8-hour work day is not as effective as one would think. To stay focused on a specific work task for 8 hours is a huge challenge. In order to cope, we mix in things and pauses to make the work day more endurable. At the same time, we are having it hard to manage our private life outside of work," Linus Feldt, CEO of Stockholm-based app developer Filimundus, told Adele Peters at Fast Company.
Filimundus switched to a 6-hour day last year, and Feldt says their staff haven't looked back. "We want to spend more time with our families, we want to learn new things or exercise more. I wanted to see if there could be a way to mix these things,"he said.
To cope with the significant cut in working hours, Feldt says staff are asked to stay off social media and other distractions while at work and meetings are kept to a minimum. "My impression now is that it is easier to focus more intensely on the work that needs to be done and you have the stamina to do it and still have energy left when leaving the office," he told Fast Company.
The thinking behind the move is that because the working day has been condensed, staff will be more motivated and have more energy to get more done in a shorter period of time. Feldt reports that not only has productivity stayed the same, there are less staff conflicts because people are happier and better rested.
No doubt Filimundus was looking at the several Toyota service centres in Gothenburg, which switched to a six-hour day 13 years ago and report happier staff, a lower turnover rate, and ease in enticing new employees to come on board. "They have a shorter travel time to work, there is more efficient use of the machines and lower capital costs - everyone is happy," the managing director Martin Banck told David Crouch at The Guardian, adding that profits have risen by 25 percent.
Back in February, a Svartedalens retirement home in Gothenburg implemented a 6-hour work day for their nurses with no changes to wage, and will be running the experiment till the end of 2016 to figure out if the high cost of hiring 14 new staff members to cover the lost hours is worth the improvements to patient care and employee morale.
"The Svartedalens experiment is inspiring others around Sweden: at Gothenburg’s Sahlgrenska University hospital, orthopaedic surgery has moved to a 6-hour day, as have doctors and nurses in two hospital departments in Umeå to the north," The Guardian reports.
While impressions of staff being happier and full of energy aren’t exactly scientific basis for declaring 6-hour work days as 'better' than the 8.7-hour work day endured by the average American, we do have evidence that what we’re doing right now isn’t working.
A study published in The Lancet last month analysed data from 25 studies that monitored health of over 600,000 people from the US, Europe, and Australia for up to 8.5 years found that people who worked 55 hours a week had a 33 percent greater risk of having a stroke than people who worked a 35 - 40 hour week, and a 13 percent increased risk of developing coronary heart disease, while a separate study found that working 49-hour weeks was associated with lower mental health, particularly in women.
And as we reported earlier this month, we probably shouldn’t even be forced to clock on at 9am anyway, with expert Paul Kelley from Oxford University’s Sleep and Circadian Neuroscience Institute saying that society is in the midst of a sleep-deprivation crisis, because our 9-5 working hours are at odds with our internal body clocks. "Staff should start at 10am… Staff are usually sleep-deprived," Kelley said. "Everybody is suffering and they don’t have to. We cannot change out 24-hour rhythms."
Hear that? Everybody is suffering and we don't have to. I guess until the rest of the world catches up with Sweden - which btw is also making moves to become the world's first fossil fuel-free nation - we'll all just have to move there.

The Case for Free-Range Parenting

The Opinion Pages | Contributing Op-Ed Writer  -- New York Times

BETHESDA, Md. — ON her first morning in America, last summer, my daughter went out to explore her new neighborhood — alone, without even telling my wife or me.
Of course we were worried; we had just moved from Berlin, and she was just 8. But when she came home, we realized we had no reason to panic. Beaming with pride, she told us and her older sister how she had discovered the little park around the corner, and had made friends with a few local dog owners. She had taken possession of her new environment, and was keen to teach us things we didn’t know.

When this story comes up in conversations with American friends, we are usually met with polite disbelief. Most are horrified by the idea that their children might roam around without adult supervision. In Berlin, where we lived in the center of town, our girls would ride the Metro on their own — a no-no in Washington. Or they’d go alone to the playground, or walk a mile to a piano lesson. Here in quiet and traffic-safe suburban Washington, they don’t even find other kids on the street to play with. On Halloween, when everybody was out to trick or treat, we were surprised by how many children actually lived here whom we had never seen.

A study by the University of California, Los Angeles, has found that American kids spend 90 percent of their leisure time at home, often in front of the TV or playing video games. Even when kids are physically active, they are watched closely by adults, either in school, at home, at afternoon activities or in the car, shuttling them from place to place.
Such narrowing of the child’s world has happened across the developed world. But Germany is generally much more accepting of letting children take some risks. To this German parent, it seems that America’s middle class has taken overprotective parenting to a new level, with the government acting as a super nanny.

Just take the case of 10-year-old Rafi and 6-year-old Dvora Meitiv, siblings in Silver Spring, Md., who were picked up in December by the police because their parents had dared to allow them to walk home from the park alone. For trying to make them more independent, their parents were found guilty by the state’s Child Protective Services of “unsubstantiated child neglect.” What had been the norm a generation ago, that kids would enjoy a measure of autonomy after school, is now seen as almost a crime.

Today’s parents enjoyed a completely different American childhood. Recently, researchers at the University of Virginia conducted interviews with 100 parents. “Nearly all respondents remember childhoods of nearly unlimited freedom, when they could ride bicycles and wander through woods, streets, parks, unmonitored by their parents,” writes Jeffrey Dill, one of the researchers.

But when it comes to their own children, the same respondents were terrified by the idea of giving them only a fraction of the freedom they once enjoyed. Many cited fear of abduction, even though crime rates have declined significantly. The most recent in-depth study found that, in 1999, only 115 children nationwide were victims of a “stereotypical kidnapping” by a stranger; the overwhelming majority were abducted by a family member. That same year, 2,931 children under 15 died as passengers in car accidents. Driving children around is statistically more dangerous than letting them roam freely.

Motor development suffers when most of a child’s leisure time is spent sitting at home instead of running outside. Emotional development suffers, too.

“We are depriving them of opportunities to learn how to take control of their own lives,” writes Peter Gray, a research professor at Boston College. He argues that this increases “the chance that they will suffer from anxiety, depression, and various other mental disorders,” which have gone up dramatically in recent decades. He sees risky, outside play of children among themselves without adult supervision as a way of learning to control strong emotions like anger and fear.

I am no psychologist like Professor Gray, but I know I won’t be around forever to protect my girls from the challenges life holds in store for them, so the earlier they develop the intellectual maturity to navigate the world, the better. And by giving kids more control over their lives, they learn to have more confidence in their own capabilities.

It is hard for parents to balance the desire to protect their children against the desire to make them more self-reliant. And every one of us has to decide for himself what level of risk he is ready to accept. But parents who prefer to keep their children always in sight and under their thumbs should consider what sort of trade-offs are involved in that choice.

At a minimum, parents who want to give their children more room to roam shouldn’t be penalized by an overprotective state. Cases like the Meitivs’ reinforce the idea that children are fragile objects to be protected at all times, and that parents who believe otherwise are irresponsible, if not criminally negligent.

Besides overriding our natural protective impulses in order to loosen the reins of our kids, my wife and I now also have to ponder the possibility of running afoul of the authorities. And we thought we had come to the land of the free.

Would you share a photo of your kids in a national magazine?

Do you find yourself somewhat interested in the lives of these kids:
  Liya-Joelle, 13; Keanu, 10; twins Kenyon and Junius, 5; and Jadee-Mae, 2?

HIER SIND VIELE FOTOS VON DER FAMILIE -- vom Instagram.

Comments on their style?

What do you suppose motivates Jermaine to be such a strong, successful, and outspoken team player here in New England?

It's nice knowing that he fully supports the NE Patriots, too.

BUSUU.com for interactive ways to learn German

 Mit Herrn Antrim

He speeds up his demo just when he shares the family members lesson with us.  I suggest viewing this lesson on your own to learn that important and interesting vocabulary.

I used an email address to establish an account.  Herr Antrim suggests that you need to pay for any  accounts on your hand-held devises, which for instance Duolingo does not.

HERE IS THE FAMILY LESSON.  Let me know if it opens for you.

Right thereafter this lesson, Herr Antrim demonstrates the interactivity parts of BUSUU.  The friend challenge sounds pretty cool to me.  Also, meeting up with other learners at your level.  Correcting other people's English in exchange for someone looking over your German is set up automatically.  I wonder how many points you can earn by doing lots of this kind of correcting, and whether you might even be able to support the (~$8) monthly fee through this method.

I like the colorful videos, the voices, and some of the exercises, which compare favorably to what Duolingo has to offer.  Another place where Duolingo shines is that it allows you to complete a unit to 100% without paying for the review exercises.

Do you want to set a goal of 1-2 hours of German per week?   I'm not sure if Duolingo has that feature.

Comments?

-- Might we have handled this situation the same way here in the USA?  -- rsb]

So

Sieh mich an,
was siehst du in mir?

Bitte Sag’s mir, denn ich will wissen was du denkst.
[Mhh, lecker]

[Refrain]
