Lehrer als Superhelden? Ein Spiel!

A Mobile Game Puts New York City Teachers in Hero's Tights
New York Times (School Book Conversation), Oct. 25, 2011, 4:58 p.m. By Anna M. Phillips

A typical superhero throws punches, not paperclips, but a typical superhero is also not a New York City public school teacher.

A new game, The Teachers of New York City, changes that, turning public school teachers into heroes and heroines who can advance from one level to the next by opening closed schools and cleaning out Tweed Courthouse, the headquarters of the city’s Department of Education.

Available on iPhones and iPads, the game originated in Philadelphia, where most of its founders live, and has now been adapted to New York City’s politics and geography.

“We wanted to make heroes, and we thought of teachers,” said Rand Lu, 31, one of the game’s developers.

“With all the things going on with teachers, the layoffs, the budget cuts — and it’s not just in New York, it’s all around America — we figured that if we did a game it might get people’s attention,” he said.

The New York City game is pretty straightforward. Public schools are shuttered, hung with bright red signs that read “Closed,” and are blocked by rocks, wood and other debris the teachers must remove.

Mr. Lu likened its simplicity to Angry Birds, the popular mobile game, but said that if it generates enough interest, he plans to expand it into a fuller story called, The Rise of the Bad Teacher. (He has already sketched out some of the details. In the longer game, a formerly upstanding New York City teacher is driven crazy by constant budget cuts. Using his knowledge of computer programming, he hacks into the city’s data systems, changing schools’ grades on the annual progress reports and generally wreaking havoc. His actions lead other teachers to join forces with the mayor and schools chancellor, who bear a striking resemblance to Michael R. Bloomberg and Dennis M. Walcott.)

Mr. Lu said that he and the other developers who worked on the game are not taking sides in the fight over how schools should be improved, but they did find inspiration in the details of those battles.

The New York City game features scenes in the Tweed Courthouse, school hallways and the city’s infamous rubber rooms, where teachers charged with incompetence or misconduct used to wait for their cases to be heard.

Though the Philadelphia game costs $1.99, Mr. Lu is testing the New York City market and now offering the game for free.

Swiss Scientists tweak gene to create MIGHTY MOUSE

Scientists have created a "mighty mouse" after tweaking a single gene to boost the muscles and enable it to run more than a mile without getting tired.

By Nick Collins, The Telegraph Science Correspondent 5:00PM GMT 10 Nov 2011

Mice which were genetically altered were able to run almost 50 per cent further and for 20 minutes longer than their normal cousins.

Although the mice developed slightly larger muscles, they did not need to eat any more than usual and were virtually indistinguishable from the outside other than by their vastly improved endurance.

The study, published in the Cell journal, could help scientists develop drugs to keep the muscles healthy in old age and find treatments for muscle-wasting diseases.

The researchers, from the University of Lausanne and the EPFL University in Switzerland, were not the first to produce "mighty mice" but said their work held greater potential for medical research.

While previous studies have focused on improving the way muscles use glucose – giving them much more explosive power – the latest experiment used a different gene which controls the way they burn fatty acids.

This meant the mice could improve their muscle performance for a longer period simply by burning more body fat, without requiring vast amounts of food to keep up their glucose supply.

Prof Johan Auwerx, who led the research, said: "If you are thinking about glucose you are talking about the sprinting muscles – we are talking about the marathon muscles.

"This is not like a sledgehammer or an on-off switch, it is like a dimmer. If you want to treat a patient you do not want to make a superman, you want to protect the muscle so it does not degrade."

World's Smallest Steam Engine Comes to Life

Posted on December 12, 2011 - 05:11 by Kate Taylor

German physicists say they've built a heat engine measuring only a few micrometers across which works as well as a normal-sized version - although it sputters, they admit.

Researchers at the University of Stuttgart and the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems say that the engine does basically work, meaning there's nothing, in principle, to prevent the construction of highly efficient, small heat engines. "We've developed the world's smallest steam engine, or to be more precise the smallest Stirling engine, and found that the machine really does perform work," says Clemens Bechinger of the University of Stuttgart.

"This was not necessarily to be expected, because the machine is so small that its motion is hindered by microscopic processes which are of no consequence in the macroworld." The disturbances cause the micromachine to run rough and sputter.

The researchers couldn't construct the tiny engine in the same way as a normal-sized one. In the heat engine invented almost 200 years ago by Robert Stirling, a gas-filled cylinder is periodically heated and cooled so that the gas expands and contracts. This makes a piston execute a motion with which it can drive a wheel, for example.

However, the working gas in the new engine consists of just one individual plastic bead measuring three micrometers, which floats in water. Since the colloid particle is around 10,000 times larger than an atom, researchers can observe its motion directly in a microscope.

The physicists replaced the engine's piston with a focused laser beam whose intensity is periodically varied. The optical forces of the laser limit the motion of the plastic particle to a greater and a lesser degree, like the compression and expansion of the gas in the cylinder of a large heat engine. The particle then does work on the optical laser field.

In order for the contributions to the work not to cancel each other out during compression and expansion, these must take place at different temperatures. This is done by heating the system from the outside during the expansion process, just like the boiler of a steam engine. The researchers replaced the coal fire of an old-fashioned steam engine with a further laser beam that heats the water suddenly, but also lets it cool down as soon as it is switched off.

The fact that the Stuttgart machine runs rough is down to the water molecules which surround the plastic bead. The water molecules are in constant motion due to their temperature and continually collide with the microparticle. In these random collisions, the plastic particle constantly exchanges energy with its surroundings on the same order of magnitude as the micromachine converts energy into work.

"This effect means that the amount of energy gained varies greatly from cycle to cycle, and even brings the machine to a standstill in the extreme case," explains Stuttgart's Valentin Blickle. Since macroscopic machines convert around 20 orders of magnitude more energy, the tiny collision energies of the smallest particles in them aren't important, he says.

"Our experiments provide us with an initial insight into the energy balance of a heat engine operating in microscopic dimensions," says Bechinger. "Although our machine does not provide any useful work as yet, there are no thermodynamic obstacles, in principle, which prohibit this in small dimensions."

We Butter The Bread With Butter --im Interview

Auf Deutsch: Wir buttern das Brot mit Butter.
Spitzname: We Butter

Who left me the name of this band on the white board today?!

I enjoyed hearing this interview from Cologne, and learned that the group has produced 2 records, many using basic nursery rhymes as text. But they've repackaged them in a hard rock sound. One fan spoke of specifically enjoying their song texts. Perhaps that is because of the interesting combination of grown up sounds and rhythms rubbing against the familiarity of texts from their youth.

Another fan spoke of really loving their wild T-Shirts. It turns out that the band members spend tons of time designing these T-shirts. Check them out. Do you like them?

In Ordnung v. DYKO

John Barrie Dyke (DYKO) ist jetzt in den USA. Er war gerade im westen von Connecticut. Schade; wir waren nicht dabei.

Wie hat Dyko die Deutsche Sprache gelernt?

DEUTSCHE IN MELBOURNE:

Musiker John Barrie Dyke:
Fühle mich deutsch - auch ohne deutschen Paß
PDFDruckenE-Mail

Sieh mich an,
was siehst du in mir?

Bitte Sag’s mir, denn ich will wissen was du denkst.
[Mhh, lecker]

(Footage from Graz below)
December 10, 2011 from WHYY

For generations the Christmas season has been infused with sweetness, but some families in Philadelphia are adding a dash of horror.

An illustration of the Krampus from an early 20th-century postcard.

There are no Christmas lights up at Janet Finegar's house in the Northern Liberties neighborhood of Philadelphia. She does not deck her halls with boughs of holly. Instead, hundreds of rib bones leftover from a neighborhood barbecue hang on a clothesline strung across her backyard. They're bleaching in the sun.

"They have been scraped, boiled, scraped again, bleached and are now strung on strands and hanging out to dry," she says. "They smell. Rib bones, as it turns out, are incredibly nasty."

She will drape the bones over herself and wear them as a part of a grisly tunic: they are the beginnings of her Krampus costume.

The Krampus is a character from European Alpine folklore, common in Austria and Switzerland. The creature stands on two hooves and has horns growing out of its skull. An extremely long tongue hangs out of its mouth, and it carries a basket to haul away naughty children.

For hundreds of years, the Krampus and Saint Nicholas have worked a kind of good cop-bad cop routine. Saint Nick rewards the good children; Krampus terrorizes the bad.

For Finegar, it's the perfect antidote for Christmas.

"If everything is sweet and beautiful and lovely and the most wonderful time of the year, some people, like me, start to get a little nauseated, want a little salt to go with the sugar," she says. "I think there [are] a lot of people out there who enjoy the idea of having a little salt."

Around the country, there are Krampus parties and club nights in December, where people dress in leftover Halloween costumes to drink and dance.

Finegar is helping to organize a traditional Krampuslauf: a procession of people dressed as Krampus, walking through the streets with noisemakers. The idea for the Krampuslauf in Philadelphia came from Amber Dorko Stopper, a mother of two.

"Spooky and scary has had a place in Christmas historically — A Christmas Carol is a ghost story with scary things in it," she says. "I hate to see everything get watered down because I remember how much fun those things are."

Krampus parades are rare in the United Sates. Last year, Joseph Ragan organized one in Portland, Ore., as a reaction to the way Christmas dominates the winter season.

"Of all the 10,000 holidays that can be celebrated, we just have this one particular version of this one particular holiday really shoved down our throats for months at a time — in the most saccharine form," he says.

Consider that Christmas muzak you hear in grocery stores before Thanksgiving. That really annoys Stopper. She's a fan of the folk tales of Krampus stealing children, throwing them into icy rivers or eating them alive.

"I realized really quickly how that was not popular brought forward into this time period. As a parent of small children, that type of story line was seen as suspicious almost immediately," she says. "Everything is so soft-pedaled these days with kids to the point where you're not showing any kind of conflict to your kids, much less folklore."

But even Stopper admits there are limits.

"Since both of our children are adopted, we're a little extra sensitive to talking about being taken away," Stopper says. "But we did tell them that, 'He'll take you to his house, you'll have to eat spicy vegetables and watch boring adult television — and then he'll bring you home.' "

The horror. The horror.

Weihnachtsmärke = Christmas Markets = LOVE

Tollwood Christmas Market: Snow, great eats and most of Munich’s population. Posted on December 10, 2011 by Jess (Blogged at LUFTHANSA comment line)

I really have to hand it to the Germans — inclement weather will not keep them from enjoying their Christmas markets. After my excursion to Tollwood Market this afternoon, I’m inclined to think that nothing will. They simply bundle up, and head out.

(In contrast, this is me on a typical Friday night in New York: ”Eh…it looks borderline drizzly. Thai delivery guy’s getting a big tip tonight!”)

I discovered this fact my first night in Nuremberg, with umbrellas blowing down the cobblestone hills like so many spiky metal tumbleweeds. It was so windy I could barely take a breath. And so jam-packed with happy people ferrying home bags of gifts that I could barely move. The warm sense of community surrounding Germany’s "Christkindlmärkte" is enough to keep the chill off no matter what the weather. And besides, many bodies generate heat. This is a fact.

Tollwood Market is different from the others I’ve visited so far on my trip, very different. For one, and I didn’t think this was possible, it’s at least twice as big. Many areas are also tented, and for good reason. You wouldn’t want the English jazz band’s equipment to get all wet. Plus, nobody likes eating largely non-portable biryani in the open when it’s rainy. Yes, Tollwood is an international, ethnically-inclined feast for all the senses. And feast I did. -- Right before I picked up some German toys for the kinder that were so amusing in their simplicity; I ended up playing with them for quite some time before the nice lady asked if I wanted to buy anything. “Quack quack!” responded the duck I was holding.

Glühwein keeps the cold off.

Every glühwein stand I passed had a line of many people, with many more crowded around. As soon as I saw flakes falling from the sky, I had the same idea. As I tweeted earlier today (and many of you agreed): Glühwein = mittens. Only yummier.

Big bull sausages

My guess is they knew it would be too crowded to see what they were serving up on menus alone. This definitely clarifies things. Texas could probably take a leaf out of their book.

No open fire permit necessary

Now here’s how you beat the cold — roasting meat over open flames in a small, potentially flammable wooden shack. I especially loved the skewers from this stand because they perfumed the entire surrounding area with the smoky wood-burning smell that really embodies the winter season.

Why don't we just melt cheese all over everything? Actually...

Leave all preconceived notions of bruschetta at the door. I’m talking about those little slices of toasted baguette, rubbed with a little garlic and topped with a spoonful of chopped tomatoes, onions and basil. This Munich variation pays homage to the Italian original by quadrupling the size and covering it with mozzarella, which is melted on a griddle to order. Now THAT’S an hors d’oeuvre.

You can really do anything to a potato and I'll eat it

Kartoffelpuffer, or German potato pancakes, are the most satisfying comfort food around. This stand sold nothing else…except beer, of course. Which you can see stacked high in the fridge. Think about it: without potatoes and beer, where would Germany be today? I give this stand two thumbs up.

Look at that cheese stretch!

Raclette is a special kind of cow’s milk cheese made high in the Swiss Alps. The pristine mountain air and water make for extremely happy cows, which in turn provide Europe with extremely happy cheese. Raclette can also refer to a dish of this cheese melted over boiled potatoes, served with bread and a few cornichons to cut the richness. Needless to say, it was the first place I stopped. If this doesn’t warm you up and stick to your ribs, I don’t know what will.

They eat POLISH SAUSAGE in München? Und wie! (And how!)

It wouldn’t be a trip to a German Christmas market without sausage. Thankfully I found it, in the truly massive form of various Polish kielbasas. The dudes working this stand seemed pretty warm and dry, all things considered. I’m sure they smelled pretty good, too. Note the chunks of bacon getting their confit on in the chafing dish. I stood by this grill for quite some time, warming up and savoring a scent so seductive I could dab it on my wrists.

At this point I decided to head into one of Tollwood’s huge tents. Lo and behold: in the first one, far more food! The holy tent of international cuisine housed a variety of foods from Turkish feta-stuffed peppers in spicy tomato sauce to pad thai and butter chicken. Ethnic artwork and sculptures were displayed all around, and to my surprise, nearly all who chowed down in this strange land were German.

The next tent I ducked into (which required stepping stones made of overturned milk crates to get over the melted snow puddles) featured several bars around the perimeter, a forest’s worth of live foliage, and a jazz band playing a great version of “Moondance” for happily imbibing patrons.

The final tent I entered was the jackpot: all the craft stands that didn’t fit in the outdoor area. And this was a big one. This fair had everything from DVDs dubbed in German to handcrafted paper, street art, sheep’s wool everything, jewelry, wood carvings, lanterns, toys, candy and…well, everything any of your loved ones could possibly want for Christmas. And then it struck me: "Christkindlmärke" are Germany’s holiday malls. But rather than trudge through the crowds with only the impersonal scent of Wetzel’s Pretzels and the same recorded versions of the same Christmas songs you’ve heard a million times to spike your merriment, Germans come together as a community, enjoy great food and company, and buy their Christmas presents in a way that promotes each city’s own local economy. Amazing.

Dear America,

Can we do this?

Love,
Jess

Dinner für One (Ms Ottie wird 90)

(Hier im Original)

Jetzt auf Deutsch mit Otto Waalkes und Ralf Schmitz
(-->Wie findest du diese zwei Komiker?)

JEDES JAHR zu Sylvester (New Year's Eve) im Fernsehen angeschaut (I wouldn't normally include this type of entertainment in this space, but the original British version has been such a classic celebration across the generations in Germany -- and very much a tradition on New Year's Eve, that I'm actually pleased to find this German version).

(,,The guests have long been dead, but that shouldn't be allowed to ruin the celebration.")

Ralf: ,,Die selbe Prozedur wie letztes Jahr, Miss Ottie?"
Miss Ottie: ,,--Die selbe Prozedur wie jedes Jahr, Ralf."
Ralf: ,,Alles klar."

Und diese Gäste heißen:
• Herr Moser
• Heinz Rühmann
• Heinz Ehrhardt
• Rudi Carell

UND JETZT ALS FOLLOW-UP:

Samy Deluxe: Poesiealbum

Man findet dieses Lied bei STEP INTO GERMAN.

HIER:STEPINTOGERMAN

Und?

Here's the text from the STEP INTO GERMAN Page:

Let’s be honest: people who openly call themselves brilliant and claim that no one else is fit to hold a candle to them, are not very likeable. Even worse, most of them are showoffs, unable to live up to their self-created image. With Samy Deluxe, it’s different. Calling himself the greatest rapper in Germany, Samy is anything but modest. However you cannot but admire his big words and blunt self-praise. Why? Because the past fifteen years of his career have proved him right.

Samy Sorge was born in Hamburg in 1977 to a German mother and a Sudanese father who left Germany when Samy was only two years old. While he started out listening to pop music by Michael Jackson, Madonna and George Michael, Samy soon became passionate for a different genre that he has stuck to ever since: hip hop.

After dropping out of school and community service, Samy dedicated all his time and energy to music and his first raps soon became expressive performances, great freestyles and intimidating rap-battles. In the mid-nineties, he founded Dynamite Deluxe with his friends DJ Dynamite and Tropf and their debut record hit the German charts at #6. Dynamite Deluxe was followed by three Samy Deluxe-solo records and several successful collaborations with, e.g. Absolute Beginner and ASD which all made it to the German top ten. Moreover, with his alter ego “Samsemilia, der Wickeda MC”, Samy Deluxe has built up a reputation as a freestyle-genius.

Besides his impressive career as a musician, he wrote a book, designed caps for “New Era” and sneakers for “Reebok”, founded his label “Deluxe Records” and has been doing a lot of social work: among other things, Samy Deluxe is ambassador of the World AIDS Day and co-founder of Crossover e.V., an association that initiates and supports the integration of and communication between teenagers of different social and cultural backgrounds.

With “SchwarzWeiß” (BlackWhite), Samy Deluxe has proved again that even ten years after the release of his first record, one cannot imagine the German hip hop scene without him. Entering the charts at #1 in summer 2011, Samy Deluxe’s fourth record is filled with bold beats and relentless but congenial lyrics that go beyond drug use, verbal assaults and pure self-aggrandizement.

For Samy Deluxe, hip hop is true art and he wants to present a more grown-up form of rap with class. In doing so, he’s still not one to keep his opinions to himself and admits freely, most notably in his song “Poesiealbum” that he is “noch immer der größte Poet, der hier lebt” – still the best poet living in Germany, someone who bears comparison with the great thinkers of the country such as Goethe, Schiller, Brecht and Heine. Bold words but how can you blame a verbal acrobat like Samy Deluxe who is passionate about and successful in everything he does for being confident?
