The September 30th 2010 Newsweek that was delivered today included a 3 pages spread (p. 55-57) on Wagner's RING TRILOGY, and introduction, called "Das Rheingold", and the "gargantuan" staging it's being given by New York City's Metropolitan Opera.
With that as an introduction, I can only imagine that you'll want to read MORE! This is from the NEWSWEEK which arrived in my mailbox today, dated Sept 30, 2010, and includes a 3-page spread (p. 55-57) about this production.
If you don't want to take years to see the entire Ring Cycle, you'll book tickets to Bayreuth in Germany, where "Mad" King Lugwig, II set Richard Wagner up to create a theater solely dedicated to his productions. (So smitten was King Ludwig with Wagner's genious, that his Castle Neuschwanstein was designed to be a magical sort of place, to pay tribute to, if not actually bring to life, Wagner's mythical world.)
OR: You could head to San Francisco this summer, where they too are presenting all 4 operas. Schedule HERE
NOTE: On December 7th, Newport's Jane Pickens Theater will show a taped version from Milan's La Scala Opera House of "Die Walküre," the 1st in the Trilogy (we missed the introductory "Das Rheingold," which was shown on May 26th). The December 7th show is 4 hours and 30 minutes long; cost $24.00 (as opposed to $600 and up for live tickets; what a deal, right?). ORDER HERE
Or at 11 am on Sunday, December 12, there's a rebroadcast for only $20. ORDER HERE
OR: Should we see about getting student tickets? ? ? Let me know if you might be becoming a Wagner fan.
