Your editorial sends the message that our public schools are failing. They aren't.

When researchers control for the effects of poverty, American schools rank near the top of the world. Our overall scores are unspectacular because the child poverty rate in the U.S. is very high, 23%, second-highest among all economically advanced countries. Children of poverty suffer from hunger, malnutrition, inferior health care and lack of access to books. All of these have a powerful impact on school performance.

The best teaching in the world won't help when children are hungry, ill and have little or nothing to read.  Our focus should be on protecting children from the impact of poverty.

  1. This is a very powerful statement. I feel that the US really needs to focus on helping its people out of poverty because, in reality, the people are what make up the nation and only when they are doing their best will the whole country be its best.

  2. I also think that the U.S should try to control the poverty percent more

  3. We are incredibly concentrated on helping other countries and Cities that we often forget that we must also concentrate on the poverty, hunger, and malnutrition here. If we concentrate on fixing the quality of life for EVERYONE here in America we would begin to perform academically, socially, and culturally in a stronger fashion.
This would benefit my generation and all of those behind us, as well as those who hold power, are teachers, workers, parents, and students.
