Was will er von mir? …

This is one of the clearest explanations I've heard of the events on November 9th 1989. Thanks Rewboss (Andrew Bossom). He even mentions these other November 9th in German history:
1848: Robert Blum execution
1918: November Revolution
1923: Beer Hall Putsch
1925: SS is formed (Protective police= Schutzstaffel)
1938: Pogramnacht or Kristalnacht v. Jews
Under 6 minutes.
Ghosts of the Berlin Wall: 8,000 Glowing Orbs Span 10 Miles
Article by Urbanist, filed under Installation & Sound in the Art category.

The work, titled Lichtgrenze by creators Christopher and Marc Bauder, will go live over the weekend of November 9th for just three days, inviting residents and visitors alike to retrace a path that in many places has been obfuscated by time and intentional attempts to bury the past.
More on the date, route and purpose from its creators: “From November 7th to 9th 2014, the inner city of Berlin will be temporarily divided from Bornholmer Strasse to Mauerpark and the Berlin Wall Memorial on Bernauer Strasse, past the Reichstag, the Brandenburg Gate and Checkpoint Charlie to the East Side Gallery: a light installation featuring 8,000 luminous white balloons commemorates the division of Berlin … the installation’s emotional and visual power evokes the dimension and brutality of the Wall.”

The biodegradable light-filled balloons will then be released in unison at the end of the weekend, floating away with messages attached by those who choose to contribute.
The balloon event will be accompanied by other interactive programs and wall stories.

Every 500 feet along the path of the lights there will be historical footage and imagery of what each area was like when the wall was still intact, leading up to its world-watched destruction in 1989. While there were walls, mines and no-mans-land zones outside of Berlin as well, there is something particularly powerful about the way the boundary impacted Germany’s capital --
slicing it brutally through its center, often cutting streets and even buildings in half.

Additional details from the press release: “The re-imagining of the Wall thru the LICHTGRENZE will be accompanied by numerous exhibitions, events, and guided tours. A new permanent exhibition will be opened at the Berlin Wall Memorial on Bernauer Strasse, and an open-air exhibition conceived by the Robert Havemann Society will be on view along the 15 km-long light installation: 100 Wall stories at the original sites where events took place.”

More on the other simultaneous programs and temporary venues:
“Large format screens at selected public locations will show impressive film collages made from historic, often little-known footage of the time the Berlin Wall fell. Three of these public venues will also offer extensive guided tours courtesy of Museum Service Berlin. Rounding out the program are a number of info- pavilions and viewing towers offering particularly impressive views of the light installation.”

Easy vocab; good message; minor key Peter Heppner revisited
Last October I blogged several Heppner songs, and today came across the printed songtext copied out for sharing in class. We never got around to it. I'm now wondering why not. Did I consider the song too dark?
The few strong verbs add interest: verderben ( to ruin), (auch im SPRUCH: "Viele Koeche verderben den Brei") and sterben ( to die) rhyme, als in 3rd person singular forms: ...
I'm reposting it, so that you can let me know what you think of this song. (I'm including the entire old post, even the text from STEPINTOGERMAN, below. Visit that site to find a nifty animated version of the song -- which at YOUTUBE is only a single still shot.) -- Danke!
[ malen = to paint]
Meine Welt…
Ich mal‘ ein Auto,
Das nicht stinkt und keinen überfährt.
Einen Herrscher, [ der Herrscher = ruler; tycoon]
Der mal nicht durch die Macht verdirbt. [verderben ( to ruin)]
Ich mal‘ einen Baum, den keiner fällt.
Ich mal‘ Geld, das keiner zählt,
Und dann mal‘ ich noch einen Krieg,
In dem keiner jemals stirbt. [sterben ( to die)]
Meine Welt…
Dass endlich was geschieht. [geschehen ( to happen)]

This line from Peter Heppner’s song “Meine Welt” (“My World”) is a slightly defiant way of saying “You can’t stop me from dreaming!”
This statement perfectly applies to Peter Heppner’s career that has had many ups and downs over the years but is nevertheless a success story – certainly also because this singer has never stopped dreaming.
This statement perfectly applies to Peter Heppner’s career that has had many ups and downs over the years but is nevertheless a success story – certainly also because this singer has never stopped dreaming.
Peter Heppner was born in Hamburg in 1967 and started out as a composer, songwriter and singer in the duo “Wolfsheim” in the late 1980s. The electro-pop and dark-wave band landed its first hit in 1991 with the English-language single “The Sparrows and the Nightingales.”
Many more records and sold out tours in Europe and the United States were to follow.
Many more records and sold out tours in Europe and the United States were to follow.
Besides this project, Peter Heppner has collaborated with a wide variety of artists. Whether it’s on the song “Wir sind wir” (“We are who we are”) that he cut with star DJ Paul Van Dyk, “Glasgarten” (“Glas garden”) with the Dark-Wave band Goethes Erben (“Goethe’s Heirs”) or the duet “Haus der drei Sonnen” (“House of the Three Suns”) with the 80’s icon Nena – Peter Heppner worked with many stars before launching his solo career in 2008.
His debut with the appropriate title “Solo” entered the German charts’ top ten and was followed by “My Heart of Stone” in 2012. Besides being heavily influenced by electro-pop this record boasts a wide stylistic and emotional variety including rock, new wave, dance floor as well as ambient sounds. “I wanted to present songs that open doors”, says Peter Heppner when talking about the album. The catchy “Meine Welt” has certainly opened an exciting and new chapter of his career.

OK. That's the promotion from the Goethe-Institut. Let me know if we should support this event. It falls on a DAY 1.
Should we decide to attend, we'll probably want to organize a group outfit or T-Shirt. I can take care of the school bus to bring us there -- for $12 per person. The concert is free.
SO, you asked just how can one win this trip to Hamburg? This just popped up after lyrics on the StepIntoGerman website:

HOW TO ENTER and HOW TO WIN
- Make a video that is not longer than 3 minutes. You can work alone or with your friends. If your video is a team effort, two team members will be awarded prizes – which means: two students will get to go to Hamburg, if that team wins the Grand Prize.
- Upload your video to YouTube.
- Send an email to stepintogerman@sanfrancisco.goethe.org with a link to the video so we can watch it.
- Do this before the submission deadline of 11:59 EST, April 15, 2014.
- We will upload the top 20 videos to our Step into Germanwebsite. The Step into German jury, consisting of jurors from the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG) and the Goethe-Institut San Francisco, will pick these 20 videos. The jury’s decision will be based on the video’s originality, creativity and interpretation of the theme. The production value will be a minor factor in the jury’s selection process.
- And now the fun starts! Get voted on by your classmates. Let your Facebook friends know about the contest. Tweet about your video. There are many ways to get people to vote for you. (Details about the voting process to follow.)
- The five top vote-getters will make it to the final round. The members of “Tonbandgerät” will determine the Grand Prize winner.
HOW TO PRODUCE
Don't worry if you've never made a video before. Your clip doesn’t need to be perfect, it doesn’t have to be slick, but it should be uniquely yours! And it's perfectly okay to make your video a team effort. Here are some ideas for your video
- Write your own song about Hamburg
- Make a video based on a “Tonbandgerät” song
- Interview some former “Hamburgers”
- Explore why Hamburg is called “The Gateway to the World”
- Portray the Hamburger SV or FC St. Pauli, two of Germany’s greatest soccer teams…
You can find a short introduction to Hamburg on “Step into German”.
But there are so many more resources on the web that will help you with the project. Especially useful is the official Hamburg travel website.

Here's Step Into German's Clip of the Month -- about less than beautiful East German city: Cottbus, and a special young man who grew up there.
NOTE: I think you'll want to win a copy of this album.
“Ich halte die Zeit an und atme sie ein. Hier will ich bleiben, hier will ich sein“
(“I stop time and breathe it in. This is where I want to stay, this is where I want to be“).
Alexander Knappe has arrived. His courage to pursue his dreams and his willingness to learn from his mistakes have helped him overcome many obstacles and brought him to where he is right now – a place where Alexander can be true to himself while at the same time making the music he loves.
It’s been a long journey. Born in Cottbus in East Germany in 1985, Alexander Knappe first fell in love with sports, not music. Being a soccer prodigy, he was discovered by scouts from Hertha BSC, Berlin’s top team, when he was 13 and subsequently moved to the German capital to attend a sports academy. At 18, a serious injury ended his career and his dreams of becoming a soccer star were shattered. Alexander had to re-orientate himself.
He always liked to sing and used to entertain his classmates by covering songs by Usher and Xavier Naidoo. So, Alexander moved back to Cottbus, took part in a local radio station casting call – and won.
"I’ve always been different from other people, often had to battle my way through life. Sports gave me the character not to give up. And music gave me the opportunity to finally be myself, to express myself and thus create a connection to other people”, he recalls.
Text
Laufen in Gedanken
CHOR:
Ich halte die Zeit an
und atme sie ein.
Hier will ich bleiben

His first music projects followed, recordings were made and concerts held. Alexander even took part in the TV casting show “X-Factor” before he released his debut “Zweimal bis unendlich” (“Twice to Infinite”) in 2012. This album full of intoxicating joy reveals a songwriter who has something to say.
"I have changed as a person and as a musician. Today, I no longer just want to be a musician, now I can be a musician. I want to stand on stage and show who I am, because I know now who I am", says Alexander.
Thus, “Weil ich wieder zu Hause bin” (“Because I am Back Home Again”) can be understood literally: Alexander Knappe has come home to himself and arrived exactly where he wants to be.
