Synopsis of Hamlet

Denmark's leading silent-screen actress Asta Nielsen had the audacity to play the title role in Hamlet, produced by her in Germany and co-directed by Svend Gade. Nielsen actually succeeded in turning the Bard's perhaps finest play into a star vehicle for herself. Mistakenly believing her husband to have died, a scheming Gertrude raises her daughter as a boy and heir-apparent. Nielsen's Hamlet is not only Horatio's best friend in this version, but she falls in love with him as well, thus becoming Ophelia's rival. The scenes between Hamlet and Horatio (and to a lesser degree between Hamlet and Fortinbras) are quite intense in what, for all the world, appear as homosexual trysts. Nielsen did not base her prince(ss) of Denmark entirely on Shakespeare, obviously, but also on a then much-talked-about novel by one Professor E. Vining.

  2. I wonder if I can buy it online or something. I think I've actually heard of Asta Nielsen before! I've watched a couple silent films before and I think she starred in the movie "The Abyss"

  3. This sounds really interesting. I for one am a huge fan of Shakespeare and like to watch all the different versons of his plays. I would love to see this though I haven't seen very many silent films in my life time. This is an old film so hopefully I can still find it some where so I can watch it. I have never read Hamlet before so I have a feeling I should before I see this movie just so I know what is going on. I can't believe that out of her over seventy films, Nielsen only made one sound movie and then retired in 1932. That is an impressive actress.
